Formatting tips

Now that you have settled in your new Nuclino workspace, time to learn how to make the most of your experience. There are a ton of handy formatting features, shortcuts, tips, and tricks for those looking to use Nuclino like a pro.

Shortcuts and markdown commands

Nuclino has a myriad of time-saving keyboard shortcuts – click on your profile picture and select 'Hints and shortcuts' to view them all.

The Nuclino editor supports a set of markdown commands, providing a quick and easy way to format content without taking your hands off the keyboard. The commands are triggered when typed at the beginning of an empty line and followed by a space.


Large heading (H1)

'#' + Space

Medium heading (H2)

'##' + Space

Small heading (H3)

'###' + Space


To quickly switch the heading style afterwards, select the header and press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+1 or 2 or 3 respectively.


Bullet lists

  • '-' or '+' or '*' + Space

  • Hitting enter will continue the list.

    • Press Tab to indent a bullet point.

  • Press Shift+Tab to unindent a bullet point.

  • Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+7 to turn one or more paragraphs into a bullet list.

Numbered lists

  1. 1. or 2. or 3. etc. + Space

  2. Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+8 to turn one or more paragraphs into a numbered list.


  • [] or [x] ([ ] and [X] work the same way) + Space

  • Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+9 to turn one or more paragraphs into a numbered list.

  • You can check a task by clicking on the box or by pressing Ctrl/Cmd+Space

Internal links

@ + item/cluster title (suggestions are shown)


To link to a suggested page, click on it or press Tab to choose the first suggestion.

External links

Paste any website link into Nuclino and it will be automatically shown as a clickable link. You can edit the name by clicking into the blue link:

Slash command

You can easily add a header, link, task, file, image, or any other element to the item by pressing '/'. It can be particularly helpful when adding a file inside a table.


Embedding media

You can easily embed a variety of media content in Nuclino by simply pasting a link. That includes Google Maps, Docs, Slides, Spreadsheets, and Drawings, diagrams from Gliffy,, and Lucidchart, videos from YouTube and Vimeo, playlists from Spotify and SoundCloud, designs from Figma, and many more. Images and files

Images and files can be easily uploaded using the insert '+' menu or the slash command. Images will be automatically displayed, while files will only display their name. You can download the files by clicking on them. Learn more in our Help Center: Use images, Use file attachments.

'---' (three dashes in a row)

Inline elements

Bold: Select the text you want to format, then press Ctrl/Cmd+B

Italic: Select the text you want to format, then press Ctrl/Cmd+I

Code: Select the text you want to format, then press Ctrl/Cmd+`

Other shortcuts

  • Copy: Select the text you want to copy, then press Ctrl/Cmd+C

  • Cut: Select the text you want to cut, then press Ctrl/Cmd+X

  • Paste: Go into the line you want to paste the copied/cut text to, then press Ctrl/Cmd+V

  • Undo: If you want to undo the last step, press Ctrl/Cmd+Z

  • Redo: If you want to redo the last step, press Ctrl/Cmd+Y

  • Go to item or cluster: To quickly jump to a different item or cluster, press Ctrl/Cmd+P

  • Command palette: To open a list of all available commands, press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+P (or Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+K in Firefox)

  • Add external link: Highlight the text you want to add a link to and press Ctlr/Cmd+K
